The European Union is the economic and political union between 27 EU countries. The predecessor of the EU, the European Economic Community, was created in the aftermath of the Second World War in 1958 and was initially aimed at fostering economic cooperation between six countries: Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands. Since 1958, 22 additional member states have joined the European Union and a single ‘internal’ market has been created. On 31 January 2020, the United Kingdom left the European Union.
The European Commission is the executive branch of the European Union, responsible for proposing legislation, enforcing EU laws, and directing the Union’s administrative operations. It is made up of 27 commissioners, one from each member state, and is based in Brussels. The Commission proposes rules and laws which are then scrutinized and voted on by the Members of the European Parliament and ministers from national governments, meeting as the Council of the European Union or council of ministers.
